Ogden Nash – a poet who specialized in short, humorous poems – lived from 1902 to 1971. Mr. Nash died before desktop computers and smartphones became household items. Yet, he saw a lot of changes in his lifetime. He apparently felt that progress can be overwhelming!
Progress might have been alright once, but it has gone on too long. Ogden Nash
Do you ever feel like you just got familiar with a new innovation when a new one comes along? Of course, a person’s comfort with the speed of “progress” is often a generational thing. Baby Boomers are frequently overwhelmed by changes in technology. However, many young adults who grew up with constant technological advances quickly embrace the coolest new gadget on the market.
Progress is not limited just to the technical domain, and not everyone welcomes even non-technical “progress!” For example, some see legalizing gay marriage as the kind of progress that they can do without!
We know that Ogden Nash made his observation about progress prior to his death in 1971. Yet, it would be interesting to hear how he would feel about the speed of change in 2016!
Progress Can Be Overwhelming
- In general, would you say that you are open to or resistant to change?
- What kind of progress (e.g., technology, social change, etc.) is most challenging for you?
- How do you cope when you feel overwhelmed by change?
- What ability, if any, do you have to control “progress” and change?
- How has progress and change made your life better?
